2020 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Cancelled

The 2020 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl has been cancelled, reports WMUR.

The football game, which pits high school seniors from New Hampshire and Vermont against one another, has been axed due to concerns over the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the game’s 66 years, it has raised millions of dollars for Shriners Hospital for Children.

Organizers reportedly called the decision to cancel the game’s 67th edition “heartbreaking”.

NH House Passes Voting, Unemployment Measures

Legislation with the goal of protecting voters and workers during the COVID-19 pandemic has passed the New Hampshire House of Representatives, reports WCAX.

The bill aims to implement permanent changes to NH’s unemployment system for the duration of the pandemic, and would allow workers to take virus-related unpaid leave. Paid leave for virus testing and state-provide PPE (personal protective equipment) for small businesses is also included.

On the voting front, measures to streamline the absentee voting process were also passed.

These bills now go to Governor Chris Sununu for a final decision. 

Police Searching for Stolen Grave Marker

Police are searching for the marker from a child’s grave in Cornish, New Hampshire that has gone missing, reports WMUR.

According to police, the marker was reported missing last week during routine maintenance. It was originally assumed that the marker was being repaired, but after contacting the family, it has been deemed stolen.

The marker is approximately 13 x 13 inches and appears to be from the early 1900’s. The marker says “Henry”. 

Red-Flag Gun Bill Passes NH Senate

A bill that would allow guns to be confiscated from those that pose a threat to themselves or others is heading to New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu’s desk, reports WMUR.

19 states and Washington D.C. have already adopted similar bills, commonly known as “red-flag” laws. The state Senate voted 14-10 in favor of the legislation, on party line. The bill is largely being supported by Senate Democrats.

Sununu has stated that he does not support changes to any of NH’s gun laws, and is expected to veto the bill. 

Main Road in Putney Closing for Construction

Main Street in Putney, Vermont is set to be closed for construction, reports WCAX.

Beginning on July 6th, Route 5 over Sacketts Brook will be closed for two weeks. This will allow for crews to remove the bridge’s concrete deck, so a new one will be installed.

While drivers will be asked to take Interstate 91 to avoid the bridge, locals are reportedly worried that they will use Sand Hill Road instead. 

NH Reports 82 New COVID-19 Cases Over the Weekend

New Hampshire State Health Officials reported 82 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, reports The Union Leader.

The 82 cases bring NH’s total up to 5,747 since the beginning of the pandemic, with 968 still being considered active.

On Saturday, two new virus-related deaths were announced, both in citizens over the age of 60. These deaths bring the state’s total to 367.

565 people have been hospitalized due to the virus, which comes to about 10% of all cases. 37 people are still in the hospital.

Several cases remain  under investigation. 

Six New COVID-19 Cases Announced in VT

Vermont Health Officials announced the state’s updated COVID-19 statistics for Monday, June 29, 2020, reports NBC 5.

Six new COVID-19 cases were announced today, bringing the state’s total to 1,208. Chittenden County has seen the most cases with 607, while Essex County has had the fewest with only three.

No deaths were announced, leaving the state’s total at 56, with no COVID-19 related deaths having been reported since June 16th.

To date, more than 64,000 tests have been conducted in VT. 

2nd Arrest Made in Connection to February Death of Pregnant Woman

Police have charged a second person in connection to the overdose death of a pregnant woman, reports the Associated Press.

36-year-old Amber Brusco has been arrested on drug charges. Earlier this year, Christopher Santolucito was charged with selling drugs. Both are connected to the death of 22-year-old Kacey Grizzaffi, who was pregnant with twins.

Brusco was released on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on July 16th. 

NH Court Allowing Some Evidence Against Man Who Killed Seven Motorcyclists in Randolph Last Year

A New Hampshire court has ruled that some evidence pertaining to Volodymyr Zhukovskyy’s alcohol and drug use will be admissible in court, reports the Associated Press.

Zhukovskyy was the driver of a truck that collided with seven motorcyclists last June.

The Superior Court decided that evidence of Zhukovskyy driving erratically earlier on the day of the crash will be admissible, along with evidence of his criminal past, which includes cases of illegal drug use.

The court denied the prosecution’s request to admit two past incidences of erratic driving. The crash occurred on June 21, 2019 in Randolph.

The seven motorcyclists who passed were a part of the Jarheads Motorcycle Club, a collection of Marines and their spouses.

Zhukovskyy has pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of driving under the influence and negligent homicide. 

Police Apprehend Barre Man Following Chase Through the Woods

A Barre, Vermont man spent a night in police custody following a police chase Friday night, reports WCAX.

On Friday, troopers from the VT State Police responded to a home in Orange after receiving complaints of a man damaging property. According to police, Kyle Green, 38, broke a window at the home and broke a vehicle’s windows in the driveway before leaving the scene.

Police tracked Green down later in the night, but he took off into the woods. The chase concluded when K-9 units found him. Green may have been involved in other incidents in Barre City earlier in the day, according to police.

Green has been charged with Attempting to Elude, Criminal DLS, DUI #4, Excessive Speed, Negligent Operation and Unlawful Mischief.
